Women entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balance

Women entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balanceWomen entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balanceThe lives of women entrepreneurs are a series of paradoxes, as one new Bank of America survey found. The bank surveyed 1,000 small geschftlicher umgang owners across the country about the state of their careers, and the woman business leaders answers were hopeful that several major workplace problems were either solved or on their way full equality in pay between men and women is only two decades away, they believed, and work-life balance is already achieved.Yet, as a person who doesnt believe that you can work over 40 hours a week and have a work-life balance, their very cheery beliefs about work made me exhausted just reading through them.Women underemphasize their stressHeres an interesting contradiction, for instance although 61% of women entrepreneurs report working more than 40 hours each week, 78% believe they have achieved awork-life balance. In their responses, women were quick to primarily emphasize the good about their jobs. The majority of women said that being an entrepreneur was interesting, fulfilling, and enjoyable. But once that was out of the way, a significant number of them admitted that they were stressed and exhausted. Nearly half of them said that their average week was demanding and one in three said that their workdays were stressful. And no wonder theyre stressed out Theyre underpaid. A 2017 report found that women entrepreneurs earn less than their male counterparts and raise less financial capital than them. And theyre outnumbered. Women only own 34% of all companies in the United States. Research found that men are what gets presented as the business owner ideal. Not being seen as entrepreneur material gets women excluded from the networks, contacts, and access needed to become great business leaders. In fact, to get around this, two female entrepreneurs recently fabricated a male co-founder just to get meetin gs with investors. And yet, despite the challenges they face, the majority of women entrepreneurs still said that there would be more women-owned small businesses and 61% said that they would achieve pay equitywith men within the next 20 years. Additionally,68% believe women will match or exceed men in becoming CEOs, CFOs and COOs, and80% believe there will be just as many or more women than men in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.So mark your calenders in 2037, all of womens problems at work will be solved.Heres hoping.

From the President April 2015

From the President April 2015 From the President April 2015 Deepwater Five Years Later Its hard to believe that nearly five years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. That explosion, which occurred on April 20, 2010, not only triggered unprecedented contamination of the northern Gulf of Mexico, but also launched an unparalleled research and investigative effort to evaluate the effects of the massive spill, in which an estimated five million barrels of crude oil gushed into the pristine waters of the Gulf over 91 days. It also prompted industry leaders, engineers, government officials and others to take measures to prevent such incidents from ever happening again. In an article that ran on ASME.org in September 2011, Deconstructing the Deepwater Horizon Blowout, it was reported that the blowout preventer valves and the shear rams designed to cut through and seal the drill pipe failed, allowing oil and gas to surge up to the rig floor and trigger the explosion that sadly took the lives of 11 workers. While neuschpfung and the evolution of engineering technology are making invaluable contributions to the betterment of our lives and advancing our knowledge, we also know that mitigating risk will always be an important part of the engineering equation. The June 2011 ASME report Initiative to Address Complex Systems Failure Prevention and Mitigation of Consequences stated that Now more than ever, there is a need to address these dynamic and far-reaching system failures. The report went on to say that while events such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks and human error are bound to occur, engineers can design complex systems to help manage risk and to reduce the likelihood of cascading failures.Later this year, Ive been invited to speak at the World Engineering Conference and Convention, in Kyoto, Japan, to talk about the lessons engineers have learned from another disaster - the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident - a result of the great Ja pan earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011. In the ASME report, Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct, a Presidential Task Force commissioned by then-ASME President Victoria Rockwell stated that Fukushima revealed new information on nuclear power plant vulnerabilities to extreme external events and advocated the need for permanent improvements to existing plants and new designs to address beyond design grund events. The nuclear industry has responded by developing new standards and guidance to minimize the probability of occurrence and to better mitigate the consequences of future accidents. We all know that as new cutting-edge technologies are implemented and systems become more complex, the need to manage risk and to apply safety and operational standards becomes ever more paramount. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal announced that the Obama administration has proposed new offshore oil and natural gas drilling regulations aimed at preventing the kind of explosi on that occurred on the Deepwater Horizon rig. The proposed regulations, which target the reliability of drilling equipment in offshore drilling operations, will require oil and gas companies to perform tests and maintenance on their blowout preventers, a key piece of drilling equipment. The Interior Department regulations are aimed at imposing tougher standards on equipment designed to keep control of a well and require real-time monitoring of certain kinds of deep water drilling or drilling performed under high pressure. In addition, the oil and gas industry has responded aggressively by developing new guidance and is continuing to work to ensure the integrity of offshore operations.Engineers will continue to play a key role in improving the safety and reliability of deepwater and other energy technologies. As stated in the June 2011 report, experience, knowledge and tools across industries are needed to aid engineers in designing fault-tolerant systems, assessing and managing ris k in systems operation, and considering the ethical responsibility associated with the management and maintenance of complex systems. Its precisely this dedication to ongoing innovation and public safety that unites us as engineers and makes me so proud to be a part of our global ASME community. So I say again what an honor to be one of you, and what a great opportunity it is to serve this profession in its many and varied aspects. J. Robert Sims ASME President

Jenny Blondel - Naturopath, Natural Hormone Health

Jenny Blondel - Naturopath, Natural Hormone Health Jenny Blondel Naturopath, Natural Hormone HealthPosted October 13, 2011, by Jordan Huidekoper The beauty of it is that I can work in an established practice one day, be in the city in the corporate sector the next, and then I can work from home. I have a very healthy work life balance being a naturopath, I have to really practise what I preach Jenny has been looking after people in Australia and the United Kingdom for 13 years, so she knows a thing or two about staying in shape. Jenny talks about the ever-expanding world of naturopathy and shares a few secrets about keeping sickness at bay this winter What is naturopathy? Naturopathy is a holistic approach to health. Its all about looking at the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of a person. Naturopaths treat each patient as an individual and we dont necessarily use a diagnosis focus rather we look at a patients diet, exercise, sleep habits and his or her general lifestyle. Naturopaths use different solutions to help people get better, like herbal medicine, nutritional supplements and homeopathic medicines. Counselling can also be involved. What qualifications do you have? I have an advanced diploma in naturopathy, as well as a diploma in herbal medicine, nutrition, homeopathy and remedial massage. I graduated in 1995 so Ive been practising for a while now. What qualifications do you have? I gained my qualifications through a private college. These days you can still go to a private college to become a naturopath, but you can also go to university. Is there a regulating body that sets minimum standards for naturopaths? Very much so. The main ones in Australia are the Australian Traditional Medical Society and the Australian Natural Therapies Association. These bodies set guidelines and codes of conduct for naturopaths, and supply guidelines to colleges and universities on setting their subjects and the calibre of people they enrol. Once a naturopath g raduates and begins working, these bodies make sure that they continue to learn throughout their career. The sector is well regulated and naturopaths have to have appropriate insurance, and, depending on where they practise, liability and professional indemnity insurance as well. What does an average day at work involve? I work for myself, and I practise in a few different locations. I do some corporate health work where I go into companies in Sydney and provide naturopathic consultations. Usually I use the company boardroom as a consultation room and patients come to see me for advice. I also offer wellness assessments in the corporate sector, which are 15-minute mini health assessments. I see patients at my practice, called Sydney Wholistic, on the northern beaches, and I also practise from home. I have more flexible hours there so that patients who work full time can make evening appointments to come and see me. Each consultation differs, of course, but at an initial consultation , I take a thorough case history of the patient, including the individuals, and their familys, medical history. I conduct iridology, which is a diagnostic method using the colour parts of the eye to identify areas of weakness. I also do facial diagnosis, which is looking at a persons tongue and at colours in their face. Inspecting nail health helps pick up any mineral deficiencies and I check blood pressure, do hormone testing and I may also offer blood testing. I also use a machine that conducts an analysis of vitality and longevity by measuring body composition, it tells me how old a person really is on the inside. Whats the appeal of having lots of different practices? I like the variety of moving around. I wouldnt say the different types of people because all people have the same problems wherever you are The beauty of it is that I can work in an established practice one day, be in the city in the corporate sector the next, and then I can work from home, where I have time to wor k on my website and on writing my e-books. It makes me feel that I have a very healthy worklife balance and that I manage my time very effectively being a naturopath, I have to really practise what I preach Have there been any major changes to the way you treat patients in recent years? Considering what I learnt when I first graduated and what I know now, theres a vast difference in the way we treat patients. Theres more and more research and information coming out all the time. A recent example is fertility management. A recent revelation is that iodine is incredibly important for womens health and fertility. Lots of nutrition companies are getting on the bandwagon and incorporating more potassium iodide into their supplements and thats really helping to improve the health of women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. Theres also lots of amazing research going on with echinacea. Echinacea is a fantastic herb for the immune system. At the moment, research is being carried out on its positive effect on our mood health. Our brains have little mood receptors called cannabinoid receptors and it has been found that echinacea has a positive influence on those receptors, increasing a state of calmness. So the herb is great for people who are studying and are experiencing feelings of anxiety. Whats the most common ailment that people consult you about? For me, its womens health, which is a very broad subject. That could include conditions such as worsening PMS, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome or menopause. Associated with all those conditions is weight gain, infertility and thyroid problems so they are quite common too. Why do you think people choose to consult naturopaths rather than going to a conventional doctor? Some people with chronic conditions may not get better after being treated by a doctor. An example of that is chronic fatigue syndrome theres not a lot up the doctors sleeve in treating chronic fatigue, apart from providing blood tests and recommending iron supplements and rest. A naturopath has a lot more to offer someone with chronic fatigue. Another factor is that some patients may be aware of their condition but may not want to go on certain prescription medications they want to try something natural first. I think that because naturopathy is very holistic we listen to people and take their opinions on board, we listen to the stresses going on in their lives and take that on board, as well as considering their diet and lifestyle. People feel well looked after with a naturopath. Depending on their condition some people might want to see a naturopath rather than a GP, but Im in favour of patients seeing both. I think orthodox medicine is amazing and has a lot to offer, and I hope that in the future doctors and naturopaths will work more closely together. Whats the best thing about your job? The best part of my job is making people feel better and they are so grateful for my help. Also, seeing someone lose 30 kilogra ms of body fat and watching their whole outlook on life adjust is very rewarding. Whats the worst? When Im dealing with chronic patients and terminally ill patients, its really tough because Im doing my best to support them and their wellbeing while theyre going through cancer treatment or something like that. Sometimes I wish I could do more, its really hard when you feel like you dont have a magic wall for those conditions. What are some tips that will help people stay healthy during winter? I have some great tips I call it my winter insurance checklist From a dietary point of view, I always recommend people to eat immune-boosting nutrients which are found in vitamin C-rich foods like capsicum, chilli, kiwi fruit, blackcurrants, oranges and broccoli. Zinc is also really important, so eat pumpkin seeds, oysters and shellfish. It is also important to generally follow a healthy diet with lots of wholegrain and adequate protein and drink plenty of water during the day. If you have a c old, I recommend that you have manuka honey and lemon drinks, ginger and homemade chicken soup (which reduces phlegm). Also, cut out or reduce your sugar, tea and coffee intake, as well as white flour products and alcohol if its in excess. Then I would generally recommend taking vitamin C, perhaps 2000 milligrams a day or more, and taking some zinc. If people are very prone to chesty coughs and bronchial type conditions, then I also recommend they take cod liver oil and, my favourite herb, echinacea. I get all my patients to take echinacea throughout the winter months and the minute they start to feel unwell to triple the dose over 24 to 48 hours. Theyre amazed at how it can stop the symptoms of a cold in its tracks. I also offer lots of common sense tips such as washing your hands regularly because the most common way a cold virus spreads is through fingertips. Also people should make sure they rest appropriately and wrap up and keep warm, so if youre going outside, wear a scarf to titelbild the thymus gland which is the master immune gland and sits behind the sternum/chest bone.
